May these words be a most cordial invitation for You and
all basketball lovers from around the world, for all good-natured
people who can appreciate the joy of sports and friendship,
for all those who are eager to try themselves and prove
their skills in one of the most popular sports and those
who wish to discover the City of Ljubljana, the charming
capital of Slovenia.
We are proud to announce that Ljubljana is organizing the
VI. World MaxiBasketball Championship in 2001 and will host
many friends, sportsmen and sportswomen from all the world.
Ljubljana is widely known as an excellent organizer of various
sports events and a generous host to the sportsmen, technical
staff and other visitors. Through the past years the city
has successfully hosted many World and European championships
and competitions in various sports.
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, lies in the centre of
this small Middle-European state. The city and its surroundings
have approximately 300,000 inhabitants. It is the cultural,
political, economic, educational, academic and sports centre
of the Republic of Slovenia.
One of Slovenia's characteristics is that it is located
at the meeting point of very different geographical regions,
so that you will find a greater variety of landscapes than
in any other European country. From its centre, the city
of Ljubljana, the Mediterranean sea can be reached just
as quickly as the Alps, the clear mountain lakes or the
Pannonian plain, the hills of the wine regions or the misterious
underground world of the Carst.
Summertime, the time when You will be visiting Ljubljana,
is the most colourful and lively season here. The medieval
streets and squares are full of life and breathe in the
rhythm of the festivals, concerts and exhibitions.
Come and contribute to its authenticity and friendly spirit.
I look forward to meeting you in Ljubljana,
Viktorija
Potočnik
Mayor of Ljubljana
